Carbs and Psychosis

Yesterday, I decided to increase carbs considerably, and this almost killed me in my sleep after going to bed (long story).  I figured that all the work I've been doing with increasing presence and disidentification would allow me to eat in a way that is normally destabilizing.  I learned the hard way that this did not pan out well.

There's some interesting information regarding carbohydrates and mental illness here:

Of course, the ketogenic diet is too strict, at least for me.  Dietary advice almost always follows black-and-white, either-or thinking.  It's either ketosis or a high carb low fat diet.  What many 'dietary advisors' don't understand is that there are degrees of ketosis.  Ketosis doesn't have to be all or nothing.  There can be milder examples of ketosis.

Having net carbs at around 125g per day seems to be best, at least in my case.  125g per day is outside of full ketosis, but also does not completely place me in carb-burning mode.

It's possible to make homemade pizza that has only around 18g net carbs for a meal.  There are breads that have around 15g net carbs per slice.  Although I don't eat noodles much anymore, it's possible to have spaghetti with a combination of 'keto noodles' with a small amount real noodles to get about the same amount of net carbs as the homemade pizza.  There are many creative ways to 'have your cake and eat it too.'

When carbs are lower but not low enough to be in full ketosis, fat intake can be higher compared with a higher carb diet of say, 250g per day.  The ratios change.

A computer program could be created displaying a scale that causes the numbers to change as carbs go up or down in relation to fat intake.  However, this is not an exact science with exact numbers.  This is more a matter of general ratios.

  1. If physiology is imbalanced, increasing presence cannot alleviate certain psychological issues. Those with imbalanced physiology can be taken over quite easily. Diet is a person's primary tool for changing physiology. And of course, disentanglement from the lurker should dramatically increase physiological balance. This does not mean one can get away with eating out of balance though.

Currently, this is a very critical time for maintaining balance.

  2. Damn it seems hard to count the calories.. I think the fact that the wheat as been modified in the last decades, plays a heavy role.

I suspect, the autor of this book found something very relevant: ( only saw an interview with him )

    1. Well, I've gone wheat free and it never helped. It is a modified version though, true. I'm doing well by eating less carbs. As long as the carbs are lower, my finding is that wheat doesn't cause weight gain. However, it probably would be healthier to get a bread machine and make homemade bread with older versions of wheat, such as spelt. Even health food stores often don't have spelt bread. Or if they do have it, it's at least twice the price of normal bread.

    2. I have spelt bread available in some "holistic" stores here and there - but it is 5 times more expensive or something like that. It doesnt seem to make me feel so heavy after eating it.
Another problem with diet changes is that it takes time to "detox" from previous life-long diet habits. That fact messes the evaluation process.
I somewhat quited the effort from the time being. The stuff that tastes the best tends to be what makes you the worst and vice versa - unfortunatly.

    3. Yeah, I've seen spelt bread at $8 for a loaf that was a bit smaller than a normal loaf!
True, detoxing takes a fair amount of time, depending on what it is.

"The stuff that tastes the best tends to be what makes you the worst"

Yeah, they designed reality to be that way. Very cruel of them, not surprisingly.
I like to bypass their rule and find ways to enjoy the food and have it be healthy. Not an easy task though!
